Great Britain has a very complicate administrative system. It is based on the traditional Counties, divided into Districts. But today there are different entities for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

England: there are Non-Metropolitan Counties, Metropolitan Counties (divided into Metropolitan Boroughs) and Unitary Authorities (that are a combined non-metropolitan county and non-metropolitan district). Some Towns are self-governed and sometimes the Unitary Authorities have the status of Borough or City. The area called Greater London has a particular status, being divided into 33 London Boroughs. For our purposes we will use the Metropolitan Boroughs, the Unitary Authorities, the Non Metropolitan Counties undivided, and the Districts of Non Metropolitan Counties that have this kind of subdivision.

CHANGES 2019 and 2020s: (QSOs prior Brexit are valid for new entities):

a) Buckinghamshire. The Districts of Aylesbury Vale (GB-BKA), Chiltern (GB-BKC), South Bucks (GB-BKS) and Wycombe (GB-BKW) have been merged to create the Unitary Authority of Buckinghamshire (GB-BUC)

b) A new UA has been created merging the Borough of Bournemouth (GB-BMH), the District of Christchurch in Dorset (GB-DOC) and the Borough of Poole (GB-POL): the Unitary Authority of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (GB-BCP)

c) Cumbria. The Districts of Allerdale (GB-CUA), Carlisle (GB-CUC) and Copeland (GB-CUD) has been merged to create the Unitary Authority of Cumberland (GB-CLD); and the Districts of Barrow-in-Furness (GB-CUB), Eden (GB-CUE) and South Lakeland (GB-CUS) has been merged to create the Unitary Authority of Westmorland and Furness (GB-WMF).

d) Dorset. The Districts of East Dorset (GB-DOE), Weymouth & Portland (GB-DOM), North Dorset (GB-DON), Purbeck (GB-DOP) and West Dorset (GB-DOW) have been merget to create the Unitary Authority of Dorset (GB-DOR).

e) Northamptonshire. The districts of Corby (GB-NHC), East Northamptonshire (GB-NHE), Kettering (GB-NHK) and Wellingborough (GB-NHW) have been merged to create the Unitary Authority of North Northamptonshire; the Districts of Daventry (GB-NHD), Northampton (GB-NHM) and South Northamptonshire (GB-NHS) have been merged to create the Unitary Authority of West Northamptonshire (GB-WNH)

f) North Yorkshire. The Districts of Craven (GB-NYC), Ryedale (GB-NYD), Harrogate (GB-NYH), Hambleton (GB-NYN), Richmondshire (GB-NYR), Scarborough (GB-NYS) and Selby (GB-NYY) have been merged to create the new Unitary Authority of North Yorkshire (GB-NYK).

g) Suffolk. The Districts of St. Edmundsbury (GB-SFE) and Forest Heath (GB-SFF) have been merged to create the new District of West Suffolk (GB-SFY); The Districts of Suffolk Coastal (GB-SFS) and Waveney (GB-SFW) have been merged to create the new District of East Suffolk (GB-SFZ).

h) Somerset. The Districts of Mendip (GB-SMM), Sedgemoor (GB-SMS), Taunton Deane (GB-SMT), West Somerset (GB-SMW) and South Somerset (GB-SMY) have been merged to create the Unitary Authority of Somerset (GB-SOM).
